Counselling takes place when a counsellor sees a client in a private, confidential and safe setting where the client can talk freely and openly to explore any difficulty the client is experiencing. For example the client may feel dissatisfaction with life with a loss of a sense of direction and purpose, or the client has suffered a trauma that they wish to come to terms with. By sharing thoughts feelings and ideas with a non judgmental, impartial and objective other person, it encourages the client to take responsibility and find a solution for themselves.

Counselling is always at the request of the client no one can be ‘sent’ for counselling.

How a counsellor can help

A counsellor is trained to listen empathetically to your problems without judgment, patiently until it is appropriate for them to contribute and discuss a matter. They may offer a different perspective to a situation that the client can then reflect on. Discussing their thoughts, feelings and concerns can help the client gain a better understanding of their feelings and actions, as well as finding solutions. A counsellor may encourage you to identify issues and take personal responsibility for them if appropriate. They can help you recognise the effects of other people and their actions and explore alternative ways of coping with them.

It can be a great relief to share your worries and fears with someone who acknowledges your feelings and can help you reach a positive solution.
